In the ongoing Test match between India and England, Rohit Sharma after reaching the score of 19*, completed 1000 runs in Test as opener alone. Notably, he also completed 1000 runs in World Test Championship 2019-2021. He became only the second Indian player to score more than 1000 runs in the Test Championship after Ajinkya Rahane.

Rohit Sharma started playing as an opener in tests during the South Africa home series in 2019 and in his debut Test series as opener itself he won Man of the Series award, amassing 529 runs from just 4 innings with an impressive scores 176, 127, 14 and 212.

Only two openers in World Cricket Herbert Sutcliffe (13 inns) and Leonard Hutton (16 inns) have scored 1000 runs as openers in Test before 17 innings.

Before Mayank Agarwal held the record for being the fastest Indian to achieve 1000 Test runs as opener from 19 innings in 2020 against Australia in the 1st Test match. He broke the long standing record of Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar who scored 1000 runs as opener from just 20 innings.
