Shubman Gill’s biggest challenge is waiting in Yorkshire, England, where Team India will play their first Test against Ben Stokes and his men in the first Test on June 20. Stepping into the captaincy’s shoes, Gill’s responsibility will be to lead from the front and help the two-time World Test Championship (WTC) runners-up kick off the competition in a positive style. The 25-year-old has replaced Rohit Sharma as India’s red-ball captain and he is now tasked to achieve the massive objective of winning the Test series on English soil after 18 years.
A week prior to the big game, Gill has come under fierce criticism for ‘prince’ written on his bat. Netizen took to social media and questioned Gill’s achievement in international cricket. An X user named Niik wrote, “The Overhyped "Prince" of Indian Cricket. Shubman Gill is so self-obsessed. Who even called you the Prince? A so-called 'Prince of ICT with a poor SENA record, a below 35 Test average, and zero overseas centuries across all formats after 5 years in his international career.”
Shubman Gill’s Test record against England
Gill’s Test numbers are fine against England as he has accumulated 592 runs with two hundreds and three fifties in 18 innings of 10 matches. However, when it comes to his performance in England, he is yet to prove himself as he has scored only 88 runs in six innings of three Tests.
The youngster wasn’t upto the mark against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as well. Appearing in three Tests, he could hoard only 93 runs in five innings. Noting Shubman’s underwhelming performances, his beraters are questioning his appointment as India’s red-ball skipper. He will have to answer his critics with his bat in the humongous Test assignment against the English team.
