Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is going to introduce a new law, aiming to curb meddling from influential people holding power after they were suspended for “political interference” by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The President of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe, who had appointed a cabinet sub-committee during November, reported back to him with necessary recommendations on Monday, January 1.
The 74-year-old had appointed a cabinet sub-committee after the Sports Minister of Sri Lanka at the time, Roshan Ranasinghe, ran the SLC by forming an interim committee, which was a blatant violation of the governance rules of the ICC. It led to the SLC getting promptly suspended by the ICC, which meant that the U19 Cricket World Cup, set to begin this month, was moved from Sri Lanka to South Africa.

In the immediate aftermath, Ranil Wickremesinghe sacked Roshan Ranasinghe and his successor Harin Fernando, followed by overturning the interim committee, to leave the elected administration of Shammi Silva intact. He had also spoken about putting together a new sports law to replace the 1973 law wherein the sports minister had the powers to appoint interim committees.
The cabinet sub-committee, headed by the Sri Lanka Foreign Minister, Ali Sabry, stated that they had reviewed the SLC’s current composition and structure for proposing reforms in it. With this, they have an objective to prevent political interference and enhance the structure of the governance of the SLC.
Also, they conducted an in-depth analysis around the reasons for the poor standing of Sri Lanka in international cricket rankings.
