In a surprising development in the tennis world, Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas has parted ways with coach Goran Ivanisevic just two months after appointing him. The split follows a disappointing grass-court season in which Tsitsipas managed only one win out of three matches and was forced to retire from his first-round match at Wimbledon due to injury.
Stefano Tsitsipas has struggled with consistency throughout the ongoing season, failing to win back-to-back matches in his last five tournaments. At Wimbledon, he fell two sets behind in his opening-round match against qualifier Valentin Royer, but advanced after the Frenchman retired due to injury. Meanwhile, coach Goran Ivanisevic, the former Wimbledon champion previously coached Novak Djokovic for nearly five years, from 2019 to 2024. His coaching resume also includes stints with Marin Cilic, Tomas Berdych, Milos Raonic, and a brief collaboration with Elena Rybakina.
I told him not to play tennis right now and to fix his back: Ivanisevic to Tsitsipas
Stefano Tsitsipas, while thanking his coach, wrote on the Instagram post, “I'm thankful for the time, effort and energy Goran dedicated to me and my team. As we are now following our separate ways, I have only respect for Goran – not just for what he's achieved in tennis, but also for who he is as a person.”
However, Goran Ivanisevic, during an interview with Clay Magazine, talked about Tsitsipas' health condition during Wimbledon, and said, “I told him not to play tennis right now. He needs to fix his back and get physically fit because physically, he’s a disaster. I can’t understand how a player of his level can be so unfit. After that, he can think about playing tennis again.”
“There are things I can explain to him and connect with him because I felt that way too when I fell to 128 in the world. He’s 26th - that’s a big difference. But I didn’t have off-court issues; I made my own problems,” added Ivanisevic.
