Granit Xhaka, the Swiss international footballer, 32, played a vital part during the unbelievable title charge of Bayer Leverkusen under the leadership of Xabi Alonso in the 2023-24 campaign. In that season, Bayer Leverkusen carved their name in history books by finishing the entire season unbeaten in the league and Xhaka played a vital role in it. He was termed as the “beating heart” of the midfield by former manager Xabi Alonso.
During his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen, the Swiss International made a total of 99 appearances, in which he scored six goals and provided nine assists. But now, ahead of the 2025-26 season, he has been confirmed as a Sunderland player, who got promoted to the Premier League from the Championship in English football last season.
Xhaka has been signed for a reported transfer fee of £13 million plus an additional £4 million in add-ons by the team which has been newly promoted to the Premier League. This move signifies the intent of the Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris who has made crucial signings in this transfer window, to establish themselves in the Premier League.

Upon his arrival at the club, Granit Xhaka shared his happiness on joining Sunderland. The Swiss international stated, "I'm very proud to be here. When I spoke to the club, I was excited and I felt the energy, and the mentality that all the people and players have. It's exactly what I wanted, and I have a very good feeling. We are back to where this club needs to be, and we want to stay here to write our own history."
The 32-year-old further added that he feels that he is ready for the challenge with the experience he has and is ready to bring the needed quality into the team. Xhaka has previously played for the North London club Arsenal in the Premier League and has spent almost seven years at the club. Xhaka will be determined to bring the flair into the team and lead them to a successful campaign.
