India legend Sunil Gavaskar has dropped his opinion on the Test retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both veterans brought the curtain down to their illustrious Test careers and dazed Team India supporters. Following the massive decision of both legendary batters, their fans are still typing to know what prompted them to bid adieu to cricket’s longest format. Kohli and Rohit were expected to take part in India’s upcoming five-match Test assignment in England. Their exit has left a vacuum in Team India as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will have to get two players who can fill their boots.
Reacting to both star players’ retirement, Gavaskar shared his thoughts while speaking to Sports Tak. The World Cup 1983 champion feels the long England tour may have led them to take the decision. He also highlighted that the age-factor and fitness would also have prompted them to leave the longest form of the sport. “If you have to make a decision, they are the only ones who can do it. Maybe they decided that if this were a 3-match series, it would have been a different story. But maybe this being 5 Test matches across 6 weeks, there’s no break, maybe that’s why they did it,” said Gavaskar.
Sunil Gavaskar feels Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma won’t feature in Cricket World Cup 2027
Gavaskar believes both Virat Kohli and Rohit might not be seen playing for India in the Cricket World Cup 2027 to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The former India opener feels that if they continue their current form, they won’t be able to break into India’s Cricket World Cup squad.
"No, I don't think they will be playing. I am being very honest. But, who knows, in the next year or so, if they strike a rich vein of form and if they keep scoring hundreds and hundreds, even God can't drop them," added Gavaskar.
