Australia veteran spinner Nathan Lyon has praised England months before the Ashes 2025-26. The English side’s bazball approach in Tests has created a lot of discussions in the cricketing circles. Relying on their new playing style, England achieved some notable success in the last three years. However, during this period, they also failed to beat Australia and India in the red-ball competitions played at home. In 2023, when Ben Stokes and his men failed to win the Ashes against the Aussie side in England, their approach was questioned. With the Ashes 2025 less than 100 days away, England’s approach is getting discussed again.
In the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, England ditched the Bazball style in numerous instances when they felt pressure from Team India. Recently, Lyon spoke to The Sydney Morning Herald and highlighted and appreciated England’s tweak in the batting approach. “It looks to me like they’ve totally changed their approach, and they’re trying to think about how to win games of cricket rather than just being pure entertainers. And they’ve played some decent cricket over the last little while,” said Lyon.
Nathan Lyon’s performance in the Ashes series
Nathan Lyon has claimed 110 wickets in 54 innings of 30 Tests against England in the Ashes series. His best bowling innings came against the English side in Birmingham in 2019, when he clinched 6/49 figures after bowling his 20-over spell. In the previous Ashes installment held in England, he took nine wickets in three innings of two contests.
In the upcoming Ashes to be held down under, he will be seen spearheading Australia’s spin-bowling department again. Last summer, when India toured Australia for five Tests, he troubled the visitors with his bowling. In his team’s 3-1 victory, the veteran chipped in with nine wickets in seven innings of five matches.
