Quite frankly, South Africa's test match captain, Temba Bavuma would be wondering that of the latest WTC cycle, there are no fewer than 3 Englishmen of the top five list of batters with most runs during this frame of time. So while that's good news, Bavuma himself having made at an average of 60, 609 games in this period of time, the one big Aussie name that he'll be countering in the WTC final is that of Usman Khawaja.
But besides Khawaja, who finds himself deservingly in this particular list, who are the other run scorers? Who are the other big run-makers from the 2023-2025 WTC cycle whose batting has not only impacted their own team brilliantly but somewhere caused harm to the opponents' bowlers and their impact with the red ball?
As the big stage of the key WTC final awaits, let us try and find out who the big names are in the World Test Championship cycle from 2023 to 2025 as they've already wrecked damage with the bat? Don't think elsewhere, look below for we have got it covered for you:
Top Run-Makers In The WTC Cycle: 2023 to 2025
1. Joe Root
Who can deny an icon his place as a great of the game, Joe Root having been a spirited solider of international match cricket and someone whose experience, class and most importantly, calmness under duress would come so handy for England in the times to come? Most recently, he played a test against Zimbabwe and his mere presence evoked standing ovation in the country.
During this titanic struggle for test match run-making supremacy in the WTC cycle we are talking about, the tall right hander, scored 1968 runs, more than any around him, from just 22 Tests and 40 innings with the bat for England.
He scored during this essential period of time, seve centuries and as many fifties for England.
The current test batting cauldron seems in great hands for England with Root holding the center spotlight alongside big names like Ben Stokes, Ben Duckett and Harry Brook, the latest white ball set up leader.
2. Yashasvi Jaiswal
One of the most promising, stylish, elegant and actually, mercurial talent around in the Test match level, Jaiswal is as successful as he is young. And all of that is a fact actually.
During the time of this particular WTC cycle, he's the second highest run accumulator of all batters involved in the pinnacle of Test contests and is second only to the legendary Joe Root.
The flamboyant left hander struck 1798 runs in this time period, that involved scoring at an average of 52.8 and with no fewer than four Test hundreds and 10 fifties.
His highest current score in this time frame is 214 not out.
It's a shame that he won't be in the WTC final.
3. Ben Duckett
The left hander, frankly speaking, is a daring, couragous left hander and someone who has a mighty fine trait of scoring runs quickly, even in test match cricket. Last year around when his team came to India, he was the opener who made a quickfire century at Rajkot that came off just 88 odd deliveries.
By that count, there have only been five centuries that have been hit at a faster rate in terms of number of deliveries by the English batters than that one.
However, during this particular WTC cycle, Ben Duckett struck 1470 runs from 22 Test matches, scoring at an average of 36, still healthy, but at a strike rate of 80 plus. He also scored during this time frame two centuries and eight fifties for England.
An accomplished and fearless lad up the order, can South Africa control him in the big final ahead?
4. Harry Brook
Harry Brook has made during the aforementioned time period, a total of 1463 runs for his country at an average of 50 plus. This includes no fewer than four Test centuries along with seven fifties. During this cycle, his highest score has been 317, otherwise his career best and a knock that came in Pakistan.
He will, quite frankly, be the most important batter in the current English test set up besides Ben Stokes himself and the great Joe Root when they face the South Africa challenge.
5. Usman Khawaja
The mighty Australian great of the game, especially in the longest format of the sport, has during this WTC cycle scored 1422 Test runs from 19 contests, at an average of 41.8, involving two Test hundreds and six fifties. During this period, this gritty top order opener had a highest score of 232. And someone like Steve Smith was behind him in terms of the number of runs.
Usman Khawaja's expertise at facing South African bowling line up will be surely needed at this big stage event and he must do well to remember his knock of 195 against the famed opponents in the past. This was at Sydney but back in the day.
