On Monday, October 16, David Warner angrily walked off to the pavilion, after getting dismissed LBW on umpire’s call on DRS, early in the Australian innings against Sri Lanka, at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The controversial moment led to the cricket fans on X, the social media microblogging platform, going berserk on the umpire’s call rule, with one of them calling it the biggest scam in the sport.

In pursuit of the 210-run target against Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup 2023, the Australian opening pair of David Warner and Mitchell Marsh began their innings well. But, at the start of the fourth over, when the scorecard read 24-0, Dilshan Madushanka, the left-arm fast bowler, trapped David Warner on his pads, which led to the on-field umpire Joel Wilson giving the batter his marching orders.

The left-handed opener, who wasn’t too pleased with the decision of the on-field umpire, sent it upstairs to the third umpire for review. On replays, the ball didn’t seem to be hitting the stumps, but the ball tracking showed that it did clip the stumps for the umpire’s call to be upheld, which led to an angry reaction from David Warner before walking back to the pavilion.

Some of the reactions on the X platform were very critical of the umpire’s call ruling for the LBWs, while others were talking about the reaction from David Warner, after he was on the receiving end of the umpire’s call.

Meanwhile, in the first half of this match, Sri Lanka managed to post only 209 runs on the board, after their openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera put together a 125-run opening stand while completing their fifties.
