Valencia CF has announced its intention to pursue legal action against Netflix over the portrayal of events at their Mestalla Stadium in the documentary "Baila, Vini," which focuses on Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior. The club contended that the documentary inaccurately depicts their fans' behavior during a match on May 21, 2023, suggesting they directed racist chants at Vinicius. Valencia asserted that the chants were misrepresented, claiming that fans shouted "Tonto, tonto!" ("Fool, fool!") rather than "Mono, mono!" ("Monkey, monkey!") as the documentary subtitles indicate.
While acknowledging that three individuals were convicted for racist behaviour during the match, Valencia emphasized that these actions do not reflect the sentiments of the broader fan base. The club has demanded an immediate correction and is exploring legal avenues to protect its reputation. The controversy has sparked broader discussions about racism in Spanish football and the responsibilities of media representations. Valencia CF has criticized the documentary for generalizing the actions of a few to the entire fan community, arguing that such portrayals undermine the club's efforts to combat racism.
Valencia celebrate 102nd anniversary of iconic Stadium Mestalla
Amidst this controversy, Valencia CF celebrated a significant milestone: the 102nd anniversary of their iconic Mestalla Stadium on May 20, 2025. Inaugurated on May 20, 1923, with a friendly match against Levante UD, Mestalla has been the heart of Valencia CF for over a century. The stadium has witnessed numerous historic moments, including hosting matches during the 1982 FIFA World Cup and the 1992 Summer Olympics.
To commemorate the 102nd anniversary, Valencia CF organized a series of events celebrating Mestalla's rich history. Festivities included musical performances, displays of historical memorabilia, and the unveiling of a new club crest atop the stadium's façade. The club also announced that proceeds from a special auction of match-worn jerseys would be donated to local charities, continuing a tradition of community engagement.
