Football can be a cruel sport and that was reiterated last night as AFC Ajax lost the Eredivisie league title to rival PSV Eindhoven by just one point on the final match-day of the season. Even after winning their last game against Twente by a 2-0 scoreline, Ajax fell short of one point due to a collective of their recent slumps. The poor outings in the previous few games came back to haunt them as they lost out on the league title with such fine margins.

All the Ajax players and fans were heartbroken but one person who seemed to be affected a tad bit more than other was Ajax manager Francesco Farioli. In a video that has surfaced from the post-match proceedings, Farioli is seen to be in tears as his team narrowly missed out on the league title in his first season in-charge at Ajax. Ajax had a nine-point lead over PSV with six matches remaining at one point in the league, but a series of losses and draws in the subsequent games, meant that PSV were able to close down the deficit and eventually clinch the title.

Farioli decides to leave Ajax after narrowly losing out on league title

In another shocking news from the aftermath of the defeat, it is now confirmed that Ajax manager Francesco Farioli has decided to leave the club with immediate effect. The young Italian manager seems to be torn apart by the league title loss and wants to depart. Only 36 years of age, Farioli actually had a really good campaign with Ajax, winning 35 out of the total 54 matches since being appointed in July 2024.

A lapse in the final stretch of the season proved too costly for Farioli’s team as the Italian is now set to leave the club. While Farioli might not continue at Ajax, many teams across Europe surely might have taken a notice of his skills and qualities and will be looking to call up the young Italian to take over.
