Chelsea women’s team star Sam Kerr led the Australian delegation at the coronation of King Charles III. Kerr was given the responsibility of carrying her country's flag as part of the Commonwealth.
She was leading the Australian contingent which included Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as they made their way into Westminster Abbey. As part of her role, Kerr was part of a number of delegations to forego King Charles III inside Westminster Abbey representing several Commonwealth nations and religious groups.

Talking about this opportunity, Sam Kerr spoke about how this will be a huge honour for her. The Matildas’ captain also expressed how this event has been moving the in the back of her mind for several days. She further spoke about she received a call regarding this opportunity.
“It will be massive and obviously, it’s an amazing honour,” said Kerr. “We’ve had so many big games recently that it’s kind of been in the back of my mind and I hadn’t had a chance to really think about it until it was coming up, so I’m a bit nervous. I found out I’d been offered the role from a phone call but I wasn’t sure if I could do it because we have a game on Sunday, but Emma’s been kind enough to let me miss a practice for it, which is very nice of her.”
Similarly, former England captain Alastair Cook along with his Essex team and the opposition side Surrey which included England players Ollie Pope, Ben Foakes and Will Jacks paid tribute to the King. Both teams lined up at the boundary at Chelmsford as God Save the King played in the stadium. Similar gestures were carried out at Headingley, Derby and Trent Bridge.
