On Saturday, May 10, John Cena retained his WWE Championship against Randy Orton after hitting him with a low blow and a title belt on his head in the main event of Backlash PLE at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis. In the press conference afterwards, R-Truth, who had essentially saved the championship for John Cena, tried to congratulate the 17-time WWE Champion, but he got put through a table for his troubles in front of the members of the media.

In the early stages of the highly anticipated championship match between two of the greatest WWE superstars of all-time, John Cena, who was staying true to his heel persona, tried to take a count out and a disqualification, but Randy Orton didn’t let that happen. After both Cena and Orton hit their trademark finishing moves Attitude Adjustment (AA) and RKO, it wasn’t enough for the win, which led to the things getting more heated up.

Randy Orton went for the punt, but John Cena countered with an another AA, but he couldn’t get the three count, and then, out of desperation, the WWE Champion tried to hit a punt, only for his challenger to get out of the way in the nick of time at the expense of referee Chad Patton getting bumped by him. After Cena introduces the championship belt into the match, he inadvertently takes out the referee this time, sending him into the ring steps.

Following a couple of table bumps taken by John Cena, Randy Orton goes into the cover, only for the WWE Champion to kick out as the second referee comes into the picture. Shortly after, Cena takes out a second referee with the championship belt in his attempt to hit Orton, who had ducked underneath, before he set up the punt, only for R-Truth to distract him and eat an RKO for his troubles.

R-Truth calls John Cena his childhood hero, but still he got a beating from him

It led to a low blow and subsequent championship belt to the face from John Cena to Randy Orton before the WWE Champion retained his title as referee Chad Patton counted the pin. After the Backlash PLE came to a close, R-Truth made his way to the press area to congratulate John Cena for retaining his WWE Championship, but the champion was having none of it.

Cena told Truth about getting ready for repercussions if he said another word to him in front of the press members, but when the latter did that, he was savagely put through the table by the 17-time WWE Champion.
