During the first ODI of the three-match series at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur, England captain Jos Buttler lost his wicket to Axar Patel after scoring his maiden fifty in the 50-overs format in India. The right-handed batter, who had a poor ODI batting record in India going into the contest, got past the 50-run mark in 58 balls before Indian left-arm spinner Axar Patel sent him back into the pavilion.
Notably, following the loss of three wickets in quick succession for England during the closing stage of the first power play stage, Jos Buttler walked out to bat with their score reading 77/3 in 10 overs in Nagpur. He shared a 34-run stand for the fourth wicket with Joe Root, who made his return to ODI cricket in more than a year, and after that, the partnership with Jacob Bethell of 59 runs brought England back into the contest.
During his measured innings of 52 runs in 67 balls, Jos Buttler struck four fours against the Indian bowlers before he skied a shorter length delivery from Axar Patel towards the short fine leg region, where Hardik Pandya completed a simple catch. Moreover, prior to this innings, the ODI stats of Jos Buttler didn’t have a pretty reading as he had scored just 221 runs in 16 innings at an average of 13.81 without going past the fifty mark.
