Jessica Pegula just can’t seem to escape this song. After the eurodance song interrupted her tiebreak against Poland’s Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals of the National Bank Open, the song has once again found its way onto the court. This time, however, the American player took it in good humor and found it funny that the song was being replayed. Of course, this time she had already sealed her victory, while the first time it played the player lost concentration and, subsequently, the tiebreak, and was rather annoyed at the unfortunate situation.
After the song by Rednex was played accidentally by the Canadian Open’s DJ during the tiebreak, the moment made headlines around the world and went viral on social media. The umpire had to ask the point to be replayed, and Swiatek didn’t let Jessica take another point in the tiebreak. The crowd at the time were rather annoyed with the mistake, which might have changed the course of the entire series save for Pegula picking up form for the third match and claiming victory in the semi-final.
However, it played again after she beat Russian Liudmila Samsonova in the final, but this time Jess was seen laughing and so was the crowd. She initially covered her face while walking off and smiled as she sat down.
Pegula destroys Samsonova in final; becomes first American to triumph in Canadian Open since 2013
Jessica Pegula has had one of the most impressive Canadian Open campaigns ever, beating Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek and Liudmila Samsonova en route to the title. She is the first American to win the Open since Serena Williams in 2013. She won the match 6-1, 6-0.
Speaking about her run, Pegula said, “Beating Coco and beating Iga were two really tough wins back-to-back. And being able to do that and then just come out today and play a really clean match was kind of great. I felt like I didn't have a ton of pressure at any point or I wasn't worried too much today."
Speaking about the importance of winning titles, she added, "Even when you're winning a lot of matches, you're still not winning tournaments, so it can get tough. Winning a week like this week makes it all worth it and makes you want to keep going for more."
