The incident occurred in the bottom of the eighth inning when the Phillies led by two runs and San Diego turned to Craig Kimbrel. Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. walked with one out and crept up to second and third as a wild throw went towards the third base.

The ball struck umpire  Brian O'Nora on the double steal and the Phillies received a little help. If it hadn't, the game may have tied and even ended in Padres' favour.

Talking about the defeat, Padres manager Bob Melvin said, “At times unlucky. But at times, we’ve made our own luck as well.” Manny Machado stated that the team should have built on the positive moments they had in the game.

“We’ve got to capitalize on those situations,” Machado said. “And we don’t. But it’s just about continuing to go out and battle. This team has shown day in, day out that we do that. Today was a good attest to that.”
