Thierry Henry announces France's 26-man preliminary squad for Paris Olympics 2024

Footballing legend Thierry Henry unveiled the preliminary French squad for the upcoming Paris Olympics later in the year. Henry, France's U-21 coach, announced a 26-man roster which didn't include superstar Kylian Mbappe. Rather the squad saw the inclusion of veteran forward Alexandre Lacazette, who had an incredible season with Lyon. Henry’s squad will get together in Clairefontaine on June 16 ahead of the Olympics, where the former Arsenal forward will have to select the final  18-player team by July 3.  France will kick off their Olympic group stage against the United States on July 24, before playing Guinea on July 27 and New Zealand on July 30.

Real Madrid confirm signing of Kylian Mbappé on free transfer

Real Madrid confirmed the signing of French forward Kylian Mbappé on a free transfer, concluding years-long wait for him to join the Spanish club. Mbappé announced his exit from the defending Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain last month at the end of the season when his contract expired. "Real Madrid C. F. and Kylian Mbappe have reached an agreement whereby he will be a Real Madrid player for the next five seasons," the Spanish champions said in a statement.

Novak Djokovic, the World No. 1 ranked player, continued his quest for the record breaking 24th Grand Slam as he cruised past Argentina’s Francisco Cernundolo in Round of 16 clash on June 3 at the Philippe Chatrier Court. The Serbian legend continued his dominant run despite injury struggles as he defeated the Argentine 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. During the fifth and final set of the match, which almost lasted for over four hours, saw the Serb bring in the plane celebration as he neared 4-3 lead in the final set at the centre court on Monday, June 3. The 37-year-old lie flat on the ground with his hands and legs stretched outwards as he brought in the special celebration.

Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur dance to Bee Gees’ ‘Staying Alive’ at French Open

World-ranked 2 Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur were seen shaking legs at the French Open 2024 on Monday, June 3. Sabalenka and Jabeur continued their dominant form in the tournament as they crashed into the quarterfinals after registering a win in their respective clashes. After the victory over the 22nd seed, Sabalenka showed off her happiness by showing her dance moves. The Belarusian broke into a dance on the Bee Gees track ‘Staying Al ive’  while moving off the court. She was joined by world number 8 Ons Jabeur who stood near a staircase which led to the locker room. 

Alex de Minaur defeats Daniil Medvedev major upset; reached quarterfinals

Alex de Minaur defeated  Daniil Medvedev in the French Open 2024 men’s singles fourth round on Monday, June 3. De Minaur took down his fifth-seeded rival with the score-line of 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 in a 2 hour and 49-minute long battle to make his way to the quarterfinals stage. Medvedev had a brilliant start to the game, but as the day progressed, the Russian seemed to have lost his way completely. As de Minaur made his way to the quarterfinals of the Roland Garros, he became the first Australian in 20 years to do so. Before him, Lleyton Hewitt had qualified for the quarters of the clay-court major in 2004.

The Serbian took down his rival despite trailing by two-sets-to-one and a break but he showed incredible resistance to turn the tide and register a 6-1, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 win. After the match, he said, " I t did disrupt me definitely in play. For two sets, two sets and a half, I didn't want to stay in the rally too long. Every time he would make sudden drop shots or change directions, I would not be feeling comfortable to do the running.  At one point I didn't know, to be honest, whether I should continue or not with what's happening. I got the medications, and then after the third set was done, I asked for more medications, and I got them.”

Sania Mirza breaks silencce on Shoaib Malik’s 3rd marriage

Former Indian tennis star Sania Mirza opened up about her love life for the first time post divorce with Shoaib Malik and his 3rd marriage. A special episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show featured, Mary Kom, Sania Mirza and Saina Nehwal. During the show, Kapil teased Mary about her marriage. Kapil also reminded Sania that Shah Rukh Khan offered to play her love interest if a film was made on her. Sania cut Kapil in middle and said, “Abhi mujhe pehle love interest dundna hai (I have to find a love interest first)” leaving everyone in splits.

R Praggnanandhaa continued his streak of upset and defeated world champion Ding Liren in the armageddon game at the Norway Chess tournament. The victory followed Pragnnanandhaa’s impressive wins in the tournament against higher-ranked stars like Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. Apart from him, his sister R Vaishali got a significant blow as she suffered a defeat in classical chess to Koneru Humpy.
