Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka lost the first round match to Camila Osorio of Colombia in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 on Court 1 at the Indian Wells, to bow out of the tournament. Following her tough loss, the 27-year-old stated on the social media platform Threads that it was the “worst match I’ve ever played in my life” before apologising to her fans as well.

Notably, after returning from maternity leave at the start of the 2024 season, Naomi Osaka has struggled with injuries time and again, which led to her retiring from the final of the Auckland Open earlier this year against Denmark’s Clara Tauson. In the third round match at the Australian Open, she had to once again retire midway from the contest against Belinda Bencic of Switzerland due to an injury.

It just feels like a little bump in the road: Naomi Osaka

During the press conference after her exit from the Indian Wells, Naomi Osaka was quite open about her recent struggles on and off court. She was quoted as saying, as per BBC Sport, “There were certain things that felt extremely off because I could only start to practice serving after a certain amount of time. I think given the situation, it wasn't that terrible. It just feels like a little bump in the road.”

The former champion at the Indian Wells from the year 2018, Naomi Osaka gave a much more critical assessment of her performance against Camila Osorio in the first round in the 2025 edition of the tournament. She wrote on Threads, “Worst match I've ever played in my life. Wow, I'm so sorry to everyone who watched that.”

But, at the same time, it is important to note that Naomi Osaka is one of the most resilient tennis players in the world, who undoubtedly has what it takes to win tournaments consistently in the near future.
