Days after undergoing a surgery on her injured elbow, Paris Olympics women’s singles gold medallist, Zheng Qinwen has officially pulled out of the upcoming tennis major, the US Open 2025. The decision of the 22-year-old Chinese international was confirmed by the tournament organisers on Monday, July 21, just days prior to the start of the marquee tournament.

It is to be noted that the World No. 6 ranked women’s singles played recently underwent a procedure on her elbow after she encountered persistent pain and discomfort. Leading to the gravity of the injury, she underwent a surgery, followed by which, she announced a “short break” from WTA Tour. "After consulting with elbow specialists and discussing thoroughly with my team, we decided that arthroscopic surgery was the best option to fully resolve the issue. Yesterday, I underwent the procedure successfully, and I'm grateful to have it behind me," Zheng began.

"Now begins the recovery journey. Over the next few weeks and months, I'll be focusing entirely on rehab - doing everything I can to come back stronger and healthier,” she continued. "This is just a short break, and I see it as a necessary step toward a better version of myself on court. Thank you all for your continued support and encouragement. I can't wait to be back - see you soon!" she further added.

With the tournament organisers confirming her withdrawal, she will also be absent from the mixed doubles, where she was set to partner with Jack Draper. It is to be noted that Zheng has had a challenging season this year. While she began her Grand Slam season facing an early exit at the Australia Open, going down against Laura Siegemund in the second round.

At the French Open 2025, Zheng reached the quarterfinals, but was bettered by World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. He struggles continued at the Wimbledon 2025, where she was handed a first-round defeat at the hands of Katerina Siniakova of Czechia 5-7, 6-4, 1-6.
