Against the backdrop of the geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan, their encounter at the Asia Cup 2025 Group A became a flashpoint. Social media erupted with boycott calls, with hashtags like #BoycottINDvPAK and #BoycottAsiaCup trending. The clash, held on September 14, 2025 in Dubai International Stadium, drew widespread criticism due to its timing, just months after the devastating Pahalgam terror attack that reportedly claimed 26 lives. However, the tensions were visibly palpable from the outset of the game, when at the toss, Suryakumar Yadav snubbed Pakistan captain Salman Agha, skipping the customary handshake. Post-match, the Indian team refused handshakes entirely, prompting Pakistan to file a complaint with match referee David Pycroft. Agha skipped the presentation ceremony in protest.
However, in a reportedly fiery outburst that has ignited fresh controversy surrounding the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi minister Saurabh Bhardwaj has lambasted Indian cricket captain Suryakumar Yadav, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the International Cricket Council (ICC) for proceeding with the India-Pakistan match. Bhardwaj, addressing a press conference on September 15, 2025 said, “Suryakumar Yadav, agar tumhari aukat hai, tumhari BCCI ki aukat hai aur tumhari ICC ki aukat hai toh tumhe dusri chunauti bhi dete hain. Jitna paisa tumne iss broadcast rights se kamaya hai, advertisers se kamaya hai aur iss pure dhanda cricket se kamaya hai, dedo uss shahidon ki vidhwaon ko, uss 26 auraton ko. Hum bhi maan jayenge tumne dedicate kiya hai (If you have the guts, if your BCCI and ICC have the guts, then here's another challenge. Whatever money you earned from broadcasters, advertisers, and this entire cricket business, give it to the widows of the martyrs, to those 26 women. Then we'll believe you've truly dedicated it.)” He further reportedly slammed the central government, asking, "Is there little humanity left in you?" for allowing the match despite public outrage. Bhardwaj praised those who boycotted despite buying tickets, calling it a stand for dignity.
“We stand by the families of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack,” Suryakumar Yadav said in the post-match interview
In his post-match interview, Suryakumar dedicated the victory to the Pahalgam victims and armed forces, reportedly saying, “Perfect occasion... We stand by the families of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. We express our solidarity. Want to dedicate the win to all our armed forces who showed a lot of bravery. Hope they continue to inspire us all, and we give them more reasons on the ground whenever we get an opportunity to make them smile.” On the field, India dominated Pakistan by seven wickets, chasing 128 in 15.5 overs.
Pakistan, batting first after winning the toss, crumbled to 127/9, with Kuldeep Yadav (3/18) and Axar Patel (2/18) dismantling their middle order. Sahibzada Farhan top-scored with 40, but a late 33 from Shaheen Afridi couldn't salvage the innings. In response, Abhishek Sharma's explosive 31 off 13 set the tone, supported by Tilak Varma's 31 and skipper Suryakumar Yadav's unbeaten 47 off 37, sealed with a towering six off Sufiyan Muqeem. The win propelled India to the Super 4s, especially after Oman's elimination by the UAE, while Pakistan must defeat the UAE to stay alive and potentially face India again.
