India veteran Ajinkya Rahane has resigned from the role of Mumbai captain ahead of the 2024-25 domestic season. Under Rahane’s leadership, Mumbai won the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy season after beating Vidarbha in the final played at the Wabkhede Stadium. Following that, he also led the side to the Irani Trophy win in the 2024-25 campaign. In the previous Ranji season, the 37-year-old looked confident as a skipper and led Mumbai to the semi-finals but lost to Vidarbha in the semi-final.
Taking to his social media handle, Rahane announced his decision and also added he is fully committed to deliver his best as a player and will endeavour to help Mumbai achieve more success in the future. “Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I’ve decided not to continue in the captaincy role. I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with @MumbaiCricAssoc to help us win more trophies. Looking forward to the season,” wrote Rahane on X.
