Days after former Bangladesh women’s cricketer Jahanara Alam made explosive revelations of sexual harassment, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Chief, Aminul Islam has finally opened up. It is to be noted that the former pacer went public with allegations that former national pace bowler Manjurul Alam sexually harassed her during the 2022 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand.
She indirectly prompted wider scrutiny of the women’s team, giving a platform for more cricketers to speak out. But recently, the BCB President finally broke silence on the matter, giving an emphatic response of “zero tolerance”. Moreover, he further asked for sometime until the inquiry is done and it comes down to a conclusive result.
BCB reiterates “zero-tolerance” stance on sexual harassment complaints
Speaking to the media on Sunday, November 9, BCB Chief Aminul Islam reaffirmed that the board will act firmly once the investigation concludes. “You've asked a question, and here's my reply — zero tolerance. Thank you,” Aminul said while adding that the committee should be given time to complete its work.
He further clarified that no position within the board would offer immunity as he was quoted as saying, “Even the Prime Minister of this country isn't exempt from such rules. We're just ordinary directors. If I go and harass someone, and it's proven to be true, then I'm just an ordinary director — not above the law.”
Notably, the BCB has constituted a three-member inquiry panel headed by retired Justice Tariq ul Hakim with Rubaba Dowla, a newly appointed BCB Director and Barrister Sarwat Siraj Shukla, a senior advocate of the Supreme Court as the members. The three-member body has been given 15 working days to submit its report.
