In the final match of the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023, Bangladesh defeated India by six runs in a last-over thriller at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, on September 15, Friday. Shubman Gill, who scored a century for India in this encounter, got out at a crucial stage with his team needing 57 more runs for victory, disappointing Yuvraj Singh with his shot selection.

Notably, the Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to field first on Friday, with the team management making five changes to the lineup from their previous win against Sri Lanka in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023. His decision was vindicated after one of the replacement players, Mohammed Shami castled Litton Das, the opener of the severely depleted Bangladesh cricket team, without troubling the scorers.

At one stage in their batting innings, The Tigers were reduced to 59-4 after 14 overs, but the captain Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy scored the fifties, coupled with late order cameos to propel their score to 265-8 in their allotted 50 overs. Then, they made a fantastic start in their bowling innings, with Tanzim Hasan Sakib picking up the wicket of Rohit Sharma for zero, before shattering the stumps of the debutant Tilak Varma for five.

Shubman Gill held the Indian innings together, scoring 121 off 133 balls, including eight fours and five maximums, to get them close to the target. He got out trying to smash Mahedi Hasan for a second consecutive six in the 44th over, finding Towhid Hridoy, who was stationed at long-off.

After India lost the match, Shubman Gill took to his official Instagram account to share a few pics from the day, captioning them, “Not enough today but all set for the finals🇮🇳”. In the comments section, Yuvraj Singh, the former ICC Cricket World Cup winner sent out a message to him, which read, “Bad shot to get out ! Could have won the game single-handed! But nonetheless we’ll played."

In spite of the loss to Bangladesh, the Indian cricket team will play the final of the Asia Cup 2023, after finishing in first place in the Super Four standings of the tournament. The grand finale will be contested between India and Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium on September 17, Sunday.
