Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has told viewers not to compare the club’s current squad with its glorious past. In the Premier League (PL) 2024-25 game held at Stamford Bridge on May 16, Chelsea beat Manchester United by 1-0. This was Blues’ 19th victory in the league after 37 appearances. They are currently in the fourth spot on the points tally and their endeavours will be to qualify for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) 2025-26 after beating Nottingham Forest at City Ground on May 25. Teams ending at the top five of the English competition will advance to the marquee European league.
Following the game, Enzo Maresca spoke to Sky Sports and said the club’s critics are evaluating the team noting their extraordinary past when the side clinched 19 trophies in 21 years, under the leadership of former owner Roman Abramovich. “For me, personally the problem is in general, you, the press. You think it is the same Chelsea from years ago. It is not the same. I don't think since I am here, we are expecting more money than other clubs. It is about building something important. People have to trust us -- we are going in the right direction," said Chelsea manager to Sky Sports.
Marc Cucurella’s goal keeps Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League hopes alive
In the initial phase of the game, Harry Maguire thought for a moment that he handed United the command over the game with a goal in the 16th minute. However, VAR review broke into the scene and the goal was declared invalid as the 32-year-old was caught setting off too early.
Following the incident, Chelsea looked aggressive and gave a tough time to the visitors. In the 71st minute, Cucurella displayed alacrity and racked up his fifth goal in the season. After the final whistle, Chelsea players and management celebrated fiercely as it was their final home game in the season. Chelsea have now accumulated 66 points earned through 19 wins and nine draws.
