The American tennis player, Emma Navarro, seeded ninth at the French Open, suffered a shock defeat in straight sets in just 57 minutes in the first round of the tournament against Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Just a few short months after making the semi-finals of the US Open, albeit on hard courts, it was a horrible performance from the 24-year-old on clay courts of the Roland Garros, failing to hold her serve right throughout the match.

At one stage during the contest, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro was up 6-0, 5-0, and she was just one game away from becoming the first women’s player to beat a top 10 with a “double bagel,” i.e., 6-0, 6-0, at a Grand Slam since 1990. Although, the world number 68 wasn’t able to do it with Emma Navarro breaking her serve for the first-time, to secure her first and only game in the match.

The American made a whopping 23 unforced errors in comparison to four winners, winning just 30 points out of possible 86 in the one-sided match, which belonged to Bouzas Maneiro. Just 44% of the first serve points were won by Navarro in the afternoon, losing her serve seven times before bowing out of the French Open in the first round itself.

This was quite an upset, not only in terms of result, but also the performance, especially when Emma Navarro had won the WTA final at the Merida Open in Mexico with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline against Emiliana Arango earlier this year. Just 12 months ago, the American had made it through to the fourth round of the French Open, while her performance at Wimbledon was impressive as well, reaching the quarter-finals there.
