Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz has been one of the hottest prospects of the upcoming summer transfer window as his list of admirers only seems to be growing longer and longer. Having signed for Leverkusen in 2020, Wirtz has been instrumental in its recent success, including Xabi Alonso’s historic first season in-charge in 2023-24 where Wirtz registered 38G/A in 49 games across the season. The 22-year-old has slammed all the talks of being a one-season wonder with another scintillating display in the current season, having scored 16 goals and given 15 assists till date.
The dynamic attacking midfielder has been a vital cog in Alonso’s plans but seems to be headed for an exit now especially after Xabi Alonso himself is leaving the club at the end of the season. Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich have been long-linked to the young German midfielder with Vincent Kompany viewing him as an ideal replacement for the departing Thomas Muller. Manchester City, who is another club interested in signing Wirtz, is in a similar situation with the departure of Kevin De Bruyne at the end of the season. Guardiola is also looking at Wirtz to fill in De Bruyne’s void and stay at the club for a long-time.
Florian Wirtz didn’t tell me that he only wants to go to Bayern: Xabi Alonso clears rumours in recent press-conference
But in a shocking recent development, Premier League giants Liverpool have also entered the race to sign Florian Wirtz. After winning the Premier League title in his debut season, Arne Slot is reportedly looking to further improve his squad to compete at the highest level again in the next season as well and challenge for even more titles. With so many high-profile names knocking at Wirtz’s door, it will be interesting to see where the youngster lands up.
Initially it was understood that Wirtz had expressed the desire to join Bayern Munich and that the Bavarians were leading the race for his signature. However, Xabi Alonso dismissed these rumours in a recent press-conference by saying, “Florian Wirtz didn’t tell me that he only wants to go to Bayern… this is not my information.” With that said, the stage is now open for a fiery transfer battle among these European giants in the coming summer transfer window.
