With Virat Kohli’s retirement rumours gaining traction, reports are emerging that Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) want a permanent solution on India’s Test captaincy conundrum. With Rohit Sharma vacating the leadership spot after announcing retirement from red-ball cricket on May 7, eyes are set on BCCI that who the board will hand the captaincy mantle for the upcoming five-match Test series in England. Some media reports are asserting that Kohli demanded Test captaincy but the BCCI rejected the request.
However, amidst these developments, Times of India has claimed that a BCCI source has revealed that noting the crucial Test assignment in England, the board and Gautam Gambhir don't want any stop-gap solutions. "A new WTC cycle is starting. Future and continuity has to be kept in mind as far as the team is concerned. Even coach Gautam Gambhir would want a set of players he is likely to work with for an extended period. There can't be any stop-gap solutions for such an important series. The last two Test series haven't been ideal for the team and the England series is very crucial,” says a source to Times of India.
BCCI wants Virat Kohli to be with the team for the England series
BCCI wants Virat Kohli to be with the side against England in the upcoming five Tests as the 36-year-old can help the team a lot with his vast experience and brilliant skills. Talking about his Test batting numbers in England, he has smashed 1096 runs in 33 innings of 17 games at an average of 33.21.
In his last Test series, Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 played in Australia, he appeared in five matches and scored only 190 runs in nine innings at an average of 23.75. Except for his unbeaten 100 in Perth, he failed to produce a decent knock from his bat in the majority of the series.
