Manchester United has finished the signing procedure with Brentford to buy Bryan Mbeumo for £71 million; however, it blasted the former club for its transfer antics, especially selling him to other clubs. United secured the signing of Mbeumo with a third bid totaling £65 million plus £6 million in add-ons. However, it later surfaced that Brentford had urged the forward to consider moves to Newcastle or Tottenham instead. Arsenal had shown strong interest in the 25-year-old, and Chelsea made a late push as well, but Mbeumo remained steadfast in his desire to join United, making it clear to Brentford that he wasn’t willing to go anywhere else.
According to sources close to the negotiations, Brentford initially demanded a package worth £70 million plus an additional £7 million in performance-related add-ons for Mbeumo. It's also reported that Brentford exerted pressure on Mbeumo to consider offers from Newcastle or Tottenham instead of United, despite the 25-year-old's clear preference for a move to Old Trafford. Additionally, Brentford are said to have urged the player to lower his wage expectations, aiming to maximize the transfer fee they would ultimately receive from the deal.
"I had to take the opportunity to join the club of my dreams," Bryan Mbeumo said on joining Manchester United
Mirror in its reports mentioned that Brentford reportedly pushed Mbeumo to consider moves to Newcastle or Tottenham instead of United, even though the 25-year-old was adamant that Old Trafford was his sole destination. The club also applied additional pressure on him to lower his wage demands, aiming to maximize the transfer fee they would receive.
However, Bryan seems to be happy in joining the new club. Mbeumo is set to travel with the United squad today for their pre-season tour in the United States and is expected to make his debut on Saturday against West Ham at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. The new deal runs until June 2030, with an option for an additional year, and will earn £200,000 per week.
"As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up," said Mbeumo mentioned on the club's website.
Meanwhile, United's director Jason Wilcox, said to Mirror, "Bryan’s goals and assists record in the Premier League is exceptional, his remarkable consistency has put him amongst the most productive players in England for the last three seasons."
