Indian cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar has made several memorable records in his 24-year career in international cricket. However, he missed a chance to become the youngest cricketer to score a Test century in a match against New Zealand in Napier on February 12, 2025. Playing the sixth Test match of his career, Sachin went on to put up his highest score at that time and nearing his maiden Test hundred at the age of 16 years.
However, Sachin Tendulkar couldn’t complete his hundred and he went back to the pavilion after scoring 88(266) runs as Danny Morrison dismissed. If Sachin had scored those 12 more runs, he not only would have completed his maiden international hundred in his sixth Test, but would have also became the youngest ever batter to score a century in Test cricket surpassing Pakistan’s Mushtaq Mohammad who achieved the feat at the age of 17 years and 78 days.
Mohammad Ashraful surpassed Mushtaq Mohammad to become youngest Test centurion
After Sachin Tendulkar failed to become the youngest Test centurion, Mushtaq Mohammad’s record remained safe for another 11 years before Mohammad Ashraful made his debut for Bangladesh in 2001. During the second innings of his maiden Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, Ashraful scored 114(212) making his debut memorable. In that game, Ashraful was 17 years and 61 days, due to which he broke Mushtaq Mohammad’s 41-year-old record to become the youngest Test centurion of all time.
However, Sahin Tendulkar also didn’t have to wait longer to get his maiden Test hundred as he scored 119 runs in a match against England in Manchester in August 1990. Sachin was 17 years and 107 days old at that time, making him third in the list of youngest Test centurions.
