In the highly sought-after Roses clash on the English county calendar, Jos Buttler, the England wicketkeeper batter, played a splendid innings to help Lancashire defeat Yorkshire by 21 runs in the Vitality Blast 2025 tournament. The 34-year-old lit up Headingley in Leeds with his swashbuckling strokeplay, to ensure that Lancashire posted a competitive total of 174 in 19.5 overs before James Anderson and Chris Green performed exceptionally with the ball to defend the runs.

After Lancashire captain Keaton Jennings won the toss and decided to bat first, he was the first batter to be dismissed in the team’s innings for just seven runs, which signalled the arrival of Jos Buttler to the crease. Buttler partnered up with his fellow England teammate Phil Salt, and these two experienced batters shared a partnership of 42 runs, which was dominated by the latter with his attacking intent.

Salt lost his wicket after scoring 42 off 29 with five fours and two sixes, and following that, Buttler took charge of the Lancashire innings with the wickets falling regularly at the other end. The former England captain managed to not only keep his wicket intact till the flag end of his team’s batting effort, but he also kept the foot on the accelerator, managing to score 77 off 46 with eight fours and three maximums before getting run out in the last over, and in the process, he also became the seventh player to reach 13000 runs in his T20 career.

James Anderson registered figures of 3/25 in his four-over spell for Lancashire against Yorkshire

For Yorkshire, the likes of Matt Milnes, Jordan Thompson, and Jafer Chohan took two wickets before the run chase didn’t begin well for them, losing three wickets in the powerplay stage in pursuit of the 175-run target with James Anderson getting two of them. Pakistan international Abdullah Shafique played a decent innings of 54 runs in 34 balls with seven fours and one maximum, but he didn’t get much support from other batters in the team.

He and Will Sutherland did share a 35-run stand for the sixth wicket, but after his dismissal, the Yorkshire innings fell away drastically to get bowled out for 153 runs in 19.1 overs. James Anderson registered figures of 3/25 in his four-over spell for Lancashire, and his opening bowling partner Luke Wood took two wickets, while spin bowler Chris Green took three wickets for not many either, to ensure that the hosts weren’t able to come anywhere close to the target in the Vitality Blast 2025 clash.
