India squash legend Saurav Ghosal has made his comeback to professional squash as he won the Sydney Classic 2025 title in his first tournament after returning from retirement. The veteran made his comeback in style after beating Egypt’s Abdelrahman Nassar in the straight contest in the final played on Sunday, February 23. Ghosal outwitted the number eighth-ranked player after clinching the figures of 11-2, 11-6, 11-6. In the final, Ghosal held his nerves and utilised his experience to get the better of his opponent in just three games.
Back in April 2024, Ghosal retired from professional squash after achieving unprecedented achievements in the sport. However, his wish to represent India at the highest level brought him back. He grabbed the opportunity with both hands and with the latest feat in Sydney, the star player has added his 11th PSA title to his distinguished career.
Ghosal’s journey to scintillating victory
In the opening round of the Sydney Classic 2025, he defeated Kijan Sultana of Malta after bagging 11-8, 11-2, 11-8 win in the 31st minute of the second match. He continued his dominance in quarter-finals where he subdued Korea’s Minwoo Lee by figures of 11-6 11-6 11-5. In the semi-final, Ghosal confronted Australia’s Rhys Dowling. This time, he got stiff competition but held his nerves to record another win. He emerged triumphant in 46 minutes with the figures of 11-9, 5-11, 11-1, 11-2.
In the final, Ghosal exhibited his fitness and skills to defeat his Egyptian counterpart. His comeback to the sport was a tactical move to keep his dream of representing India alive. After his recent notable success, he will look to represent India in further international competitions and add more achievements to his remarkable career.
