Star young batsman Shubman Gill is leading the race to become India’s next captain in the Test format after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from red-ball cricket. The Indian skipper bid adieu to the longest format on the evening of May 7, but will continue to play the ODIs format. Now, as India are looking for a new Test captain ahead of their England tour, Gill has emerged as the front-runner to replace Rohit as per the reports by ESPN Cricinfo.
Notably, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was the vice-captain of the Indian team during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under and also led India in two of the five Test matches. However, the reports were coming that the selectors have been looking for a some other player to be vice–captain due to Bumrah’s injury concerns. Now, as Rohit Sharma announced his Test retirement on Wednesday, the debate for the new Indian Test captain heats up.

Shubman Gill also came up with a heartfelt message for Rohit Sharma following his retirement from the Test format. He has been Rohit’s deputy in the ODI format and was a part of the Indian team the won the Champions Trophy 2025 under his captaincy. Reacting to Rohit’s retirement from red-ball cricket, Gill shared a story on his Instagram where he hailed Rohit for his contribution in the Tests not just as a batter and a captain.
“India is grateful for what you've done in tests as a player and a captain. You've been an absolute inspiration to me and everyone that has played with or against you. There are things I've learnt from you that I'm going to remember forever. Happy retirement to @rohitsharma45 one of the best captains that I've played under,” Gill wrote on his Insta story.
