The co-owner of Kolkata Knight Riders, Shah Rukh Khan, has reportedly handed a blank cheque to the team mentor Gautam Gambhir to stay in his role for 10 years amidst rumours of him filling India’s head coach vacancy. As per the latest development, the BCCI has contacted Gautam Gambhir to apply for the head coach role of the Indian cricket team, and he is keen to take up the offer.

Notably, Gautam Gambhir has achieved a lot of success in mentoring a couple of teams in the IPL in the last three years. After taking the Lucknow Super Giants, one of the newest teams in the tournament, to the playoffs in the back-to-back seasons, he joined Kolkata Knight Riders, and they have been playing some of their best cricket in recent memory, reaching the IPL 2024 final.

According to a report from Dainik Jagran, Gautam Gambhir, who showed his interest in coaching the Indian cricket team to the BCCI, is only willing to apply for the post on one condition, if he is given a “selection guarantee.” It has been stated that Gambhir might meet the BCCI top heads in Chennai on the sidelines of Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final of the IPL 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Prior to accepting the role of the Indian head coach, Gautam Gambhir will have to give up his role of mentoring the Kolkata Knight Riders, which he had accepted after the involvement of the co-owner Shah Rukh Khan. But, the report from Dainik Jagran further stated that SRK handed Gambhir a blank cheque, showing his willingness to keep him with the franchise for whatever sum of money he wanted while telling him to manage KKR for 10 years.

Notably, the final date to apply for the head coach role of the Indian cricket team is Monday, May 27, a day after the IPL 2024 final between KKR and SRH in Chennai.
