Former Team India opener Virender Sehwag has criticised Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for his batting approach in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 25. Batting first, CSK witnessed the early fall of Shaik Rasheed and Sam Curran within the first powerplay. With the early departure of both batters, CSK sent Ravindra Jadeja at number four. Along with Ayush Mhatre, the veteran was expected to stand at the crease and stabilise the innings but both couldn’t do much. Mhatre went back to the dugout in the sixth over after scoring 30 off 19 while Jadeja remained in the middle until the 10th over but scored only 21 after consuming 17 balls.
Ravindra Jadeja's innings concluded after getting cleaned up by Kamindu Mendis. Noting Jadeja’s timid batting style, Sehwag said that the veteran CSK all-rounder should’ve aimed to stand at the crease until 18th over to make other batters play around him. Former India opener also called out his strike rate in the match. “Jadeja has got a useless strike rate, but at least try to stay out there till the 15th or 18th over. The rest of the batters can then play around him,” said Sehwag on CricBuzz.
Ravindra Jadeja’s miserable numbers as batter in IPL
Ravindra Jadeja has looked out of rhythm with both bat and ball in IPL 2025. Showing up in nine matches, he has racked up only 166 runs at an average of 27.66 and a strike rate of 125.75. These numbers do not justify his role as an all-rounder in the side. With their five matches left in the competition, CSK will expect Jadeja to ship up as a batter to help the team display fighting spirit to qualify for the playoffs.
Donning the bowler’s role, he has taken only six wickets in eight nine at a strike rate of 8.23. On the other hand, his junior colleague Noor Ahmad has reinforced CSK's spin-bowling unit magnificently, picking up 14 wickets in nine outings at an economy of 8.03.
