Hours after World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and Brit No. 1 Jack Draper withdrew from the upcoming National Bank Open 2025 in Toronto, World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz also decided to pull out of the tournament. However, the organisers did not confirm the reason behind Alcaraz’s decision to withdraw from the tournament, but the Spaniard recently took to X to reveal the reason behind his move.
Notably, the Spaniard last appeared on the tennis court during the Wimbledon 2025. The 22-year-old went down against the top-ranked Sinner in a four-set thriller at the Centre Court on July 13 with a scoreline of 6-4, 4-6, 4-6, 4-6, ending his dream to complete a hat-trick of wins at the grass court Grand Slam.
Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from Canadian Open with muscle issues
Taking to X, Carlos Alcaraz finally broke silence on his absence from the upcoming ATP 1000 Masters tournament. “After many consecutive weeks of competition without rest, I will not be able to play in Toronto this year. I have small muscles issues and I need to recover physically and mentally for what comes next. To the tournament and to my fans in Canada I am very sorry, I will see you next year! ❤️" he wrote in a post on X.
The Tournament Director, Karl Hale also opened up on Alcaraz’s absence from the tournament, calling it “disappointing.” “It’s disappointing to lose a player of Carlos’ quality, as we know our fans were looking forward to watch him. Although, he has been on the scene for a while, he’s still at the beginning of his career and there will be plenty of opportunities for Canadians to see him again in future,” Hale added.
The 22-year-old Spaniard reached the quarter-finals in his best run at the Canadian Open in 2023, where he was bettered by American Tommy Paul. It is to be noted that Alcaraz owns a 48-6 record this season as per the ATP win/loss index and has claimed five titles including the Roland Garros trophy this season. Moreover, the tournament will not see the presence of some top-class players including Jannik Sinner, who recently completed a quartet of Grand Slams, along with Novak and Draper, both of whom are recovering from their respective injuries.
