Yesterday saw a wonderful bit of cricketing action in the mega world of the Indian Premier League.

To be able to beat Kolkata used to be, at one point of time, not the easiest thing to do, let alone taking the iconic side down at their own venue or playground - the Eden Gardens. But the sheer ease and unflappable manner in which a young talent from the Lucknow camp did that and much of it on his own surely beckons respect. So credit to where it’s due- Mukul Choudhary has been brilliant for LSG with the bat and currently, the cricketing headlines truly belong to him.

A dashing performance

When the chips were down and the big names had already walked back, it was an unlikely hero who stood tall for the Lucknow Super Giants.

Mukul Choudhary produced a sensational unbeaten knock of 54 off just 27 deliveries, guiding his side home in a match that had seemed all but lost. Calm, composed, and clinical — the young batter delivered when it mattered the most.

Rising Amid The Collapse

Now, when someone does that- doesn’t it truly inspire the rest of the team given its ensemble of fans, particularly during a run chase?

Lucknow’s chase had derailed dramatically with the early dismissals of skipper Rishabh Pant, followed by the dangerous duo of Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh.

Even the ever-reliable Nicholas Pooran couldn’t steady the innings. With the pressure mounting and expectations fading, Choudhary walked in.

What followed was a knock of maturity well beyond his experience.

Registering his maiden fifty in the Indian Premier League, he anchored the innings from one end while ensuring the scoreboard kept ticking. There were no signs of panic, no unnecessary risks — just calculated aggression and remarkable composure.

Composed despite the pressure  Perhaps the most impressive aspect of his innings was how effortless it seemed.

In a high-pressure chase, where wickets were falling and the required rate loomed large, Choudhary barely looked troubled. He absorbed the pressure, picked his moments, and finished the job — almost as if he had been doing it for years.

Inspired by Trust After the match, Choudhary reflected on a key source of his confidence — team owner Sanjiv Goenka.

“Sanjiv Goenka sir comes from my hometown of Jhunjhunu. In our very first meeting, he assured me of his constant support. His trust in me has been a big motivational factor and a driving force,” he shared. That belief clearly translated into performance on the field.

A top performer in the works?

Every IPL season throws up new heroes. We’ve seen that with the likes of Paul Valthaty and the likes in the past. And suddenly there also emerged someone who’s now a household name- Rinku Singh.

And given his yesterday’s soaring unbeaten fifty, Mukul Choudhary may just be the latest name to watch out for. On a night when established stars failed, it was his grit and clarity that made the difference.

For Lucknow, this wasn’t just a win. It was a very special one at that. A nervy win. An unpredictable one at that and was the arrival of a new match-winner.
