Former India batter Ajay Jadeja has criticised Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill for his remark on Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) young opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Pursuing a score of 210 runs against Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 game played at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on April 28, Suryavanshi took GT’s bowling attack to the cleaners and helped the hosts to chase down the target in just 15.5 overs. Along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, the 14-year-old stitched a 166-run opening partnership in just 71 balls. Suryavanshi went on to notch up his maiden IPL ton in just 35 balls and became the batter to hit the second-fastest hundred in the league. The youngster concluded his innings after scoring 101 off just 38.

Yashasvi stood at the crease until the end and took RR home in 15.5 overs. The 23-year-old went back to the dugout with his unbeaten 70 off 40. After the game, when GT skipper Gill was asked about Suryavanshi’s knock, the 25-year-old didn’t speak much and said, “It was his (lucky) day. His hitting was just tremendous, and he made full use of his day." However, Gill’s brief remark drew criticism from Ajay Jadeja, who felt that it wasn’t luck that helped Suryavanshi achieve the notable milestone.

"But a 14-year-old to believe in himself, the amount that he believes in himself, and to take it that far, even if it's, you know, one day like some player on television just said, oh, it was just his lucky day," said Ajay Jadeja to JioStar after the match.

Shubman Gill scores his fourth fifty in IPL 2025

Before Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s extraordinary knock, Shubman Gill dazzled the game with his superb 84 off 50. After winning the toss, RR invited the visitors to bat first and Gill did a magnificent job as an opener with his spectacular innings that included nine boundaries (five fours and four maximums). It was his fourth fifty in IPL 2025.

Accompanying Gill, Jos Buttler also did a fine job at number three and amassed an unbeaten 50 which came in just 26 balls. However, GT bowlers couldn’t contain RR openers and spoiled all the excellent work from both Gill and Buttler eventually.
