David Beckham’s Inter Miami lost 1-4 to Minnesota United FC at the Allianz Field on May 11, in their second defeat of the new MLS season. The match saw a dominant Inter Miami, who maintained 74% possession throughout, go down to defensive errors as Minnesota capitalized on the few chances they got. In the aftermath of the game, Minnesota’s social media admins did not hold back in trolling Inter Miami for the defeat and posted a series of posts targeted at the club with one of these posts including a caption saying ‘Pink Phony Club’.
It referred to Inter Miami’s pink-coloured kit and it did not seem to sit well with the Miami club’s ownership figure David Beckham, who hit back at Minnesota FC. He put a comment in reply saying, "Show a little respect. Be elegant in triumph", referring to the repeated jibes taken after his team’s defeat. The fans in the stadium also seemed to be delighted with their team’s victory over Inter Miami and started singing the famous ‘Wonderwall’, displaying their clubs’ scarfs after the 4-1 victory.
Culture over cash: Fans display cheeky banners during match targeting Inter Miami
In fact, there were a couple of other banners displayed across the stadium, which were also targeted towards the Miami club. One of the banners read, ‘History over Hype; Culture over Cash’, taking a dig at Inter Miami’s cash-rich signings of big names like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez etc. in the recent years under David Beckham’s ownership. Talking about the match, Minnesota scored the first goal from Bongokuhle Hlongwane after a patient build-up in the final third. They doubled their lead just before the half-time whistle when Anthony Markanich converted a headed chance through a long throw-in from near the touch-line.
Inter Miami got some consolation with a goal from star-man Lionel Messi in the 48th minute but further defensive lapses including an own-goal from Marcelo Weigandt added to Miami’s misery as they finished the game with a 1-4 scoreline. The defeat was the second of their current season and has left them in fourth place in the points table with 21 points from 11 games.
