Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has delivered a lot of memories to cricket supporters. From India’s ODI World Cup 1996 quarter-final triumph over Pakistan to Chris Gayle’s record 175-run knock for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013, M Chinnaswamy Stadium has delivered some joyful moments to avid cricket supporters. However, in June 2025, the iconic venue came in the limelight for a negative reason as RCB’s maiden IPL title celebration led to a stampede which resulted in 11 deaths and more than 50 people getting severely injured.
Following this incident, RCB, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and the Karnataka government faced severe criticism for the mismanagement. A couple of months after the infamous incident, the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has given a green signal to INR 1,650 crore mega sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra, which will also feature a cricket stadium with a seating capacity of 80,000 spectators.
Following the completion of this ambitious project, it will become the second-largest cricket stadium in India, following Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The sports complex will not only host cricket matches, but it will also include eight indoor and eight outdoor sports arenas, state-of-the-art gyms and training facilities, Olympic-sized swimming pools, guest houses, hotels, hostels, and a convention hall for conducting international events.
Bengaluru’s fondness for cricket is well know with RCB
Bengaluru’s love for cricket has been corroborated several times. Whenever RCB play their IPL games at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, local people throng at the venue to support the side. The city has produced iconic cricketing figures for Team India such as Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Javagal Srinath, and KL Rahul, among others.
The city is also home to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) Centre of Excellence, which is known for producing future stars. The new stadium will also ensure that the city continues to remain a prime venue for international cricket, IPL games, and other marquee events.
