Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor Gautam Gambhir is reportedly in talks of becoming head coach of Team India. The Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) invited applications for the position of head coach of the men’s team. The tenure of India’s current head coach Rahul Dravid will come to an end after the T20 World Cup 2024. The deadline for the application ended on May 27, 2024, and the BCCI will soon take a call on who will succeed Rahul Dravid as the new coach of the side.
According to reports, after Kolkata Knight Riders’ victorious campaign in IPL 2024, Gautam Gambhir is highly likely to become India’s next coach. The former India opener and WC 2011 hero, Gambhir was earlier associated with the franchise during his cricketing tenure and led them to their first two IPL titles. Before the beginning of the 2024 season, Gambhir returned to mentor the side after being with the LSG for two seasons.
The 42-year-old’s return to Kolkata proved to be a masterstroke and KKR won their third trophy under the mentorship of Gambhir. According to Cricbuzz, a very high-profile owner of an IPL franchise informed that Gambhir’s appointment is a done deal and the announcement will be made soon. Not only this, but a very high-profile commentator who is very close to the happenings said that BCCI is trying to rope in Gambhir.
If he agrees to the deal, Gambhir will have to leave his job at KKR to take up the role at the national team. Notably, Gambhir hasn’t been associated with any team as their coach.
