Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are expected to break ties with former India pacer Zaheer Khan, who was associated with the side as mentor in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Zaheer became LSG’s bowling coach after Morne Morkel left the post of bowling coach to join Team India’s coaching staff in August 2024. Lucknow’s performance wasn’t upto the mark in IPL 2025 as they concluded their campaign in the seventh spot with 12 points in 14 games. Zaheer was expected to bring discipline among LSG bowlers but the performances reveal that he couldn’t deliver effective results to the side.
As per The Times Of India (TOI) report, LSG are looking to part ways with Zaheer but they are in search of a mentor who will be given a broader role to handle RPSG Group’s teams. “LSG is set to part ways with Zaheer Khan and the new mentor will be given a bigger role to monitor RPSG Group’s other franchises,” remarked a source to TOI. Recently, Bharat Arun got the role of LSG bowling coach. As per sources, he will not be limited to IPL. Arun can be seen giving his services to RPSG Group-owned other sides as well.
LSG’s journey in IPL since 2022 season
LSG joined IPL in 2022, and playing their first two seasons under KL Rahul’s captaincy, Lucknow succeeded in qualifying for the playoffs. In 2024, Super Giants’ failed to reach the playoffs for the first time after ending their journey in the seventh spot.
Following the 2024 failure, Lucknow released Rahul and bought Rishabh Pant as captain after spending INR 27 crore in the IPL 2025 auction held in Jeddah. However, Pant struggled to be among the runs for Lucknow and failed to justify the humongous price tag. In 14 games, the 27-year-old could score only 269 runs at an average of 24.45.
